Riding 160km's to change lives

A family living with T1D

Type One Diabetes has been a part of our family life for a very long time. My older sister Joanne was diagnosed with T1D when she was 11. That was when I was 9 and I am now 57. Back then it was not easily diagnosed, there were no CGM's (Continuos Glucose Monitors) , no pumps, lots of guesswork and lots of hypos (low blood sugar leading to unconsciousness)

Then back in November 2025 I was diagnosed with LADA. Latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA), or type 1.5 diabetes, is a slow-progressing form of autoimmune type 1 diabetes that develops in people over the age of 30. The immune system slowly destroys insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas and then whammo - you have T1D.

So I’m taking on the Breakthrough T1D One Ride to raise vital funds for type 1 diabetes research. On 21 November 2026, I’ll be cycling through the picturesque Barossa Valley - pushing myself physically to ride 160kms in one hit.

Type 1 diabetes can affect anyone, at any time. Every day, 8 Australians are diagnosed. It’s a relentless 24/7 condition, requiring up to 180 extra decisions daily just to stay safe and healthy.

I would greatly appreciate a small donation from anyone who is interested in supporting me. Thank you for your support!

Currently I rode maybe 50kms max so shall be upping my rides over the coming weeks and shall give updates each week.

My Updates

Week 7/9 - 13/9

Tuesday 15th Sep
This week I got some more rides in which is great.
On Tuesday 8/9 did a small MTB ride with my mate from Orange. Just did 32km and 257m of climbing around Homebush and Parramatta. Wednesday did my normal Parra loop of 43km with 400m of climbing. On Saturday we rode out to Badgery's Creek going 111km and 888m of climbing.

So overall rode 186kms. Getting the kms up.

Week 31/8 - 6/9/26

Tuesday 8th Sep
I managed to get in 3 rides. 2/9 I did 43km (379m elevation), 4/9 I did 40km (397m elevation), 9/6 on Fathers Day did 60km (893m elevation). Not a great week as no ride Saturday as I had to get my raod bike repaired.
So - 3 rides, 143km and 1669m elevation. Not even close!

Diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at just 11, and turning 60 next year, I've certainly experienced my fair share of highs and lows – quite literally! Some overnight lows were pretty frightening, and I'll always be grateful to Mum and Paul, my trusty rescue team, glucagon injections and all! Then came Paul's surprise LADA diagnosis in 2025 – a slower-developing form of Type 1. Not exactly the family club we'd hoped he'd join! Type 1 affects far more than blood sugar, which is why ongoing research is so important. Have a fabulous ride through the Barossa, Paul – I'll happily leave the cycling to you! Here's to more breakthroughs, fewer highs and lows, and hopefully a cure one day! 💕

Good on you Paul - I have had the privilege of working with parents & their children with T1D in my early career and witnessed the courage and tenacity of all involved as they took on the 'highs' and 'lows'....management has come a long way since then and will continue to improve....yet you have another challenge ahead of you for sure in that ride.....stay safe ...wish I could join you, Pat

This is a great cause Paul! My sister in law also has type 1 diabetes and I see first hand how it affects someone physically and mentally, especially that she is pregnant and my neice will be due in October (can’t wait) due to diabetes pregnancy has been quite challenging for her as she has been in and out of hospital. I hope my little donation can help another family or person.
